The Funny Stories (#jammed daily devo, day 328)

November #jammed: Gracious.

Day 328: Thankful for blogs.328

And when you are old, I will still be there, carrying you.

When your limbs grow tired, your eyes are weak,
And your hair a silvery gray, I will carry you as I always have.
I will carry you and save you. Isaiah 46:4

It started out with funny stories. Moments from my children’s toddlerhood that I didn’t want to forget. Not just the image of the moment, but how it felt. I wanted to be able to look back on this space as if it were a living scrapbook …alive with all of the memories of motherhood.

God has watered this space into a beacon of encouragement for other moms coming up behind me, living alongside, and passing advice down. He can take anything that we do and turn it into something amazing, if we’ll only give it to Him and dedicate ourselves to honoring Him in all we do.

Today’s verse prompts a vision in my mind of a time when I’ll be old and gray …still clacking away at the keyboard when everyone else is talking into the air to record their thoughts on a higher piece of technology. I’ll still be encouraging …writing …speaking of His love in the practicalities of my everyday life.

When we live as Christians, we age in confidence knowing that when we grow old and weak, He will still sustain us as He always has. (as today’s verse reminds us.) When we follow Jesus, we get to live within the constant encouragement of His love. A safety blanket that we never have to grow up and out of. A Bible that can be battered, highlighted, and torn …but never loose an ounce of it’s power to guide and steer our lives.

To believe in Jesus is to throw our lives into His arms.

The Springs (#jammed daily devo, day 302)

October #jammed: Free Grace.

Day 302: Equally stretched.

“I trust in God, so why should I be afraid?” Psalm 56:11

“Hand me another spring!”day 302

“OK, mom!”

That day’s adventure was setting up the trampoline, a task we weren’t sure we would be able to do without my husband …but we thought we’d give it a girl power try. After confusing a few steps and taking a few breaks, we finally got a system of attaching the springs down.

The springs can’t be put on one right after another. After the first spring is on, we ran over to the opposite side of the trampoline and put a spring on over there. They have to be spaced out so that the pressure of the stretch is even throughout the whole thing.

Trying to take a spring off that had been put into the wrong slot took more strength than I had, so I went around to the other side and took springs off to release the pressure …and then back to move the one I’d miscounted. It was a painstaking process!

Today’s verse reminds us that, no matter what painful and particular processes we endure in this life, we needn’t be afraid. Calm and deep, Christ-led breaths will get us through this life.  It’s not always easy, and sometimes we make a mistake and have to unravel the progress we’ve made. There’s loss along the way, forever good-byes and discomforting pain.

“Why should I be afraid?”

We shouldn’t. Not when we trust God. Not when Christ resides in our hearts and the Spirit lights our way. His love cannot be swayed or diminished by any hardship we go through. He promises that we will get through, and get to, Him. Through a life of walking, following, and keeping on …we will arrive home.

Father, Praise You for the promise that we will make it through this life and into Your arms in heaven. Thank You for Jesus’ death on the cross, and our belief in Him that assures that final destination.

The Night In. (#jammed daily devo, day 230)

August #jammed: Reflecting on Grace.

Day 230: Sometimes …just stay.

When I learn to rest and truly trust Him,August 18
He sends His help. This is why my heart is singing!” Psalm 28:7 (VOICE)

The time I look forward to the most are Friday night’s, when my little girls can’t wait to giggle and talk to me about whatever they can find to talk to me about until they can’t stay awake any longer. I cherish those moments I get to look upon them, sleeping so peacefully within reach. I know those days are fleeting.

Family game nights where we argue over who’s turn it us and who skipped who more than we play the actual game. Movie nights or “Fuller House” nights, when my girls line up their favorite chairs next to our couch. Sundaes on Sunday, when we settle in after a busy day of church and dance, to relax in the home we’ve been blessed with and enjoy each other’s company.

We are not immune to meltdowns and hard times, but I cherish all of the time I get with this family I prayed so hard for since I was a kid. Answer to prayer isn’t always easy to live out, but we can trust that He hears and answers.

Today’s verse reminds me to rest and trust Him. It’s easy to fear the future as the days slip by quicker and quicker …and bad things seem to happen all around us …and to us …more frequently. But knowing Christ means realizing we are always loved.

“That is why my heart is singing!”

Jesus is the reason my heart is singing. Jesus is the reason my heart is content.  Trusting in Christ isn’t expecting an easy life, but knowing Who to navigate it with. The more we follow Him, the less we care about going outside of His will for our lives, and the more we cherish and praise Him for what we have within.

Father, Praise You for blessing us each with life. Thank You for creating each of us with special and divine purpose. Forgive us for taking credit for the good in our lives, and assuming fault for the bad. Though sin is consequential, You do not always provide a direct answer  for the hardness we are promised in this life. Help us to follow you ardently in gratitude each day we are blessed to live, knowing You have a job for us to do. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
